Lacrosse: what it takes to play in college

The ranges college lacrosse coaches look for at each level, how many scholarships exist, the odds and the dates coaches may reach out. Every figure names its source.

Every figure says what kind it is. Official: a governing body's own rule or data. Published data: measured numbers from a named data owner. Study: a journal article or thesis, usually one team. Typical range, recruiting services: a recruiting company's rule of thumb, not measured data and not a standard. Sources read October 30, 2026.

What it takes

Measured numbers barely matter. Lacrosse recruits on club and showcase play and film.

  1. Club and showcase play where college coaches watch.
  2. Game film and a highlight reel.
  3. The best odds of any sport here: about 14% of high school players reach an NCAA team, because Division III sponsors many teams.
  4. Grades and core courses.

Ranges by measure and position

No governing body (the NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA) publishes a number by division that a player must reach. A range is guidance, and no number promises a roster spot or a scholarship.

Roster and scholarship limits

Since July 1, 2025, Division I schools in the five defendant conferences or that opted in to the House settlement follow a roster limit instead of a scholarship limit, and may fund any or all of the roster. Schools that did not opt in keep the old scholarship limit. Division III gives no athletic aid.

When athletes commit

In a 2017 NCAA survey of recruited Division I athletes, those in lacrosse who committed early did so in grade 10.6 (men) and 10.7 (women) on average, where 11.0 is the start of junior year. The survey came before rules that pushed contact later, and athletes who committed before 11th grade were less likely to enroll where they committed.
